A scarce English .54 calibre Percussion pistol with a nickel-silver frame, made by VAN WART SON & CO. Circa 1835. Engraved on top of the breech the makers name VAN WART SON & CO. Henry van Wart was born in Tarrytown New York in 1783. He emigrated to England where he acted as a merchant in Birmingham from 1808. With his son George he traded as Henry Van Wart Son & Co, focusing on exporting various Birmingham made goods to America, including supplying goods to the south. He became British by a special act of Parliament, founded the Birmingham Stock Exchange and served as one of Birmingham's first aldermen and a director of the Birmingham Banking Company. He was married to Sarah Irving, the sister of author Washington Irving. Decorative nickel silver frame and butt cap. The pistol is fitted with a swivel captive ramrod. The finely chequered walnut grip fitted with a nickel-silver oval escutcheon. 6 inch heavy octagonal barrel. Action in good working order. The barrel stamped with a British proof mark. Action very crisp. Overall length 10 inches. In good overall condition showing little signs of use or wear. Ref 3199. This is an obsolete antique item and is sold as a collectors item only.
