This sword is very similar to many other horse-mans or dragoons swords of the period and has an iron basket guard comprised of individual bars. (please see photos). Manufactured probably circa 1750-1760. The blade is a good old blade but is later than the hilt and is possibly a replacement during its working life. The blade is 35 inches long, & dates from circa 1830, and has etching and figures to both sides including a mounted horseman with raised sabre. It also has the wording Dieu et mon droit to one side. Dieu et mon droit, meaning "God and my right", which is the motto of the Monarch of the United Kingdom.The grip made of wood with its original wire binding, and is quite possibly the original grip dating from circa 1760. Overall length is 39 inches. This and various other similar types of horseman's or Dragoons basket hilt swords are known to have seen service in Europe during the Napoleonic wars 1795-1815, as well as during the American Revolutionary Wars circa 1775- 1783.
