The pith helmet, also known as the safari helmet, salacot, sola topee, sun helmet, topee, and topi is a lightweight cloth-covered helmet made of sholapith. The pith helmet originates from the Spanish military adaptation of the native salakot headgear of the Philippines. It was often worn by European travellers and explorers, in the varying climates found in Southeast Asia, Africa, and the tropics, but was also used in many other contexts. It was routinely issued to European military personnel serving overseas in hot climates from the mid-nineteenth to the mid-twentieth century. This ‘Pith’ helmet is covered with khaki cloth with a khaki pugree, dark green inside with a manufacturers label ‘Hobson & Sons (London Ltd) (Hobsons began their uniform business close to Woolwich Barracks, South London, England. Clothing and Regimental Regalia were made for all members of the armed forces using traditional tailoring and handcraft techniques. Hobsons business grew to such an extent that by 1860 five shops were open in and around the Woolwich area. Their expertise and reputation for quality was rapidly established among customers, particularly the locally based Royal Artillery)’ with vent *missing chin strap and internal sweatband (see page 109 item 194 of ‘Military Headress’ by Colonel Robert . To the front of the helmet is the K.R.R.C helmet badge (the King's Royal Rifle Corps was an infantry rifle regiment of the British Army that was originally raised in British North America as the Royal American Regiment during the phase of the Seven Years' War in North America known in the United States as 'The French and Indian War’. Subsequently, numbered the 60th Regiment of Foot, the regiment served for more than 200 years throughout the British Empire. The helmet is accompanied by its original travel tin. The hinge, handle and clasp are in good working order *the vent to the top is showing signs of service wear but is not damaged. The tin has a nice aged patina. The helmet is a size ‘7’ *see images.
