Description

An ARP Warden's main task was to try and protect people during air raids, when enemy planes dropped bombs, especially on cities. They would hand out gas masks and guide people to shelters. If a gas attack was suspected, warning was given locally by means of the ‘ARP’ warden's hand rattle, and the all clear was announced through the ringing of hand bells. The brass bell stands 26cm high (base 39cm circumference), with Oak handle (12 ½ cm) with brass retaining screw. ‘Fiddian’ is stamped to the collar (made at the Fiddian Bell foundry Of James Barrell in Birmingham). The cast clapper is held with a steel chain. A.R.P (Air Raid Precautions) is stamped to the sound bow. A good piece of history for the collector. The price includes UK delivery.
