In exerts from the assessment he states “Type 98 Army officer’s Shin Gunto sword. This blade looks like a murato all over oil tempered bar stock steel.. Has no visible hamon temper line. The hazy / fuzzy hamon is put on with polishing stones. In bright polish signed (Nakiri Shimei) ‘KANE NORI’. This means signed by another worker in arsenal where this was made. Kane Nori made low to medium grade gendaito. His real name is Kojima Taro younger brother of Kane Michi (won 1st seat in 1941 sword making exhibition). Saya is metal parade scabbard, mounts are faded, brown paint is pitted and marked with war service wear. Most of its gilding & finish intact. Tsuka in overall good condition. Its knot loop has its original Lieutenant to Captain rank tassel (blue & brown), some wear but intact,. Locking catch is worn, does not lock”. In his illustrations Bill identifies a partial Nagoya arsenal stamp, painted assembly mark, translates the smith signature as above and date ‘March 1943’.
